Japan’s Kansai Electric Power Co Inc (TYO:9503), or KEPCO, plans to convert the 375-MW second unit of its Aioi power station from heavy oil/crude oil to woody biomass in partnership with Mitsubishi Corp (TYO:8058).
The two companies have formed a joint venture called Aioi Bioenergy Corporation with the objective of promoting and developing biomass power generation in Japan. The new company has an initial capital of JPY 450 million (USD 4m/EUR 3.8m), of which KEPCO has invested 60% and Mitsubishi Corporation Power Systems Inc (MCP) has contributed 40%.

Aioi Bioenergy will be the one to realise the conversion project in Hyogo Prefecture. The particular Unit 2 has been operating since November 1982. Following the conversion, it will have a capacity of 200 MW.
The Aioi power plant has two other units, each with 375-MW capacity and running on natural gas, heavy oil and crude oil.
MCP already operates about 73 MW of solar power plants and is currently developing and building wind and geothermal power generation projects across Japan.
